I've decided that I want to retire. I reached this decision on Saturday evening while I was eating dinner. Actually, it was Saturday afternoon, a little after 4:30pm. I was eating with the old folks at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, and they've got a pretty good setup.

A month ago, I found out that a great aunt and uncle of mine were displaced by Hurricane Katrina and were on their way to DC. They'd been living at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, Mississippi, but there was so much damage there that they had to escape to their sister institution up here. They've decided to stay, and it's great to have family in the area. I hadn't seen them since 1993, but we've gotten reacquainted over the last few weeks. I've run some errands for them, and they've fed me at the AFRH cafeteria.

And that's why I'd like to be retired: they have the best spread of food that I've seen since I've been here. There is all the food you could want, and the soup is actually a decent temperature! It's not boiling hot, so you can eat it right off the bat like you're supposed to. There's a full salad bar, desert, cereal bar...you could really do pretty well for yourself there. Of course you have to be 60 to live there; oh, and have served a full military career. Looks like I won't make it in, but I'm going to visit pretty often.

It's been really nice having Uncle Jim and Aunt Vi in DC. It gives me someone to spend Saturday with, and I've enjoyed getting to know them again. Aunt Vi is going to Indianapolis for a granddaughter's wedding on Sunday, and she'd asked me to help her get to the airport. She'll get a reintroduction to DC's public transportation system!

Things are really, really busy at work. I'll update on it later.
